Can You Add a Tesla Referral Code After Ordering (UK)?

The flat answer to "can I add a referral code after I've ordered?" is no — we say so on the FAQ page and elsewhere. But that one-line answer doesn't cover the follow-up questions UK buyers actually ask once they're in an edge case. Here's each scenario checked on its own terms.

I already placed an order with no referral link. Can I cancel and reorder with one?

Mechanically, cancelling and placing a fresh order is a new order — so opening a referral link before you configure that new order should attach it the same way it would for any first-time buyer. What we can't tell you is anything about your original order's fees, refundability or how quickly you could get a new build slot — that's a commercial question for Tesla directly, not a referral one, and we won't guess at terms we haven't confirmed.

I ordered without a link and just want to change the colour or wheels. Does that count as "after ordering"?

Amending an existing order's configuration doesn't create a new order — it's the same order, just with different options. We haven't found published guidance stating that a configuration change re-opens the referral window, and the consistent pattern across every source we've checked is that the trigger point is order confirmation, not any later edit. Treat a configuration change on an existing order as not restarting the clock.

What if I add Full Self-Driving or another option weeks after ordering?

Same answer as above, for the same reason: adding an option to an order that's already confirmed is an edit to that order, not a new one. If the referral wasn't attached when the order was first confirmed, adding options afterwards doesn't create a fresh opportunity to attach it.

I started with a reservation, not a full order. Does the referral rule apply at the reservation stage or the order stage?

Where a model uses an initial reservation step before a full configuration, the safer assumption — and the one we use throughout this site — is to treat the reservation as the trigger point, not the later conversion into a full order. Open the referral link before the reservation, not after, if your model works this way.

My order got transferred to a different Tesla region or store because I moved house. Does the referral survive that?

We haven't found published guidance covering this specific scenario, and we won't invent an answer. If this applies to you, ask Tesla directly what happens to an already-attached (or already-missing) referral when an order transfers — don't assume either outcome.

I ordered without a code by mistake. Is there an appeal or exceptions process?

Not one we've found documented anywhere, and every UK source we've checked describes the same firm rule: it cannot be added retroactively once the order is confirmed.
