What's specific to the Model 3
The Model 3 is Tesla's compact executive saloon: the lightest and most aerodynamic car in the UK range, which usually makes it the most efficient — so your 650 free miles tend to stretch further than in a heavier SUV. It's offered in rear-wheel-drive, Long Range and Performance forms; the referral treats them all the same, so choose on range and budget. How to claim it
The Model 3 is the one that can stay under £50,000
Alongside the Electric Car Grant cap there is a second threshold almost no UK referral page mentions. From 1 April 2026 the VED Expensive Car Supplement threshold for zero-emission cars rose from £40,000 to £50,000. Stay under it and you avoid the supplement entirely; cross it and you pay £440 a year for five years — about £2,200 — on top of the standard rate.
Being the smaller and cheaper of the two eligible cars, the Model 3 is the more likely of the pair to sit under that line, and on the lower trims it is the configuration where the threshold is genuinely winnable rather than academic. That makes the spec sheet worth reading twice:
- The test is list price, not the price you pay — so a discount, a trade-in or a finance deal does not bring a car back under the threshold.
- Options count toward it. On a Model 3 built close to the line, paint and wheels can be the difference between paying nothing extra and paying £2,200 across five years, which is worth many times the 650 free Supercharging miles.

The threshold that beats both: how you pay for it
Two price gates have now appeared on this page — the grant, which no Tesla clears, and the £50,000 VED supplement line, which a Model 3 often can. Both are worth understanding. Neither is the largest number available to a UK Model 3 buyer.
That is how the car is paid for. Where an employer offers salary sacrifice, an electric company car is taxed through benefit-in-kind at a rate that remains a small fraction of the equivalent for petrol or diesel, and the sacrifice comes out of gross pay. The saving is a percentage of the whole cost of the car rather than a fixed sum off it, which is why it operates on a different scale from anything else discussed here — and why it is the first question a Model 3 buyer with access to a scheme should ask.
We are not going to quote your figure, because it depends on your salary, your tax band, your employer's scheme and the BiK rate for the year the car is registered — and the BiK rate for EVs is on a published upward path rather than fixed. What we will say is the ordering: price the finance route first, check the £50,000 supplement line second, and treat the referral as the ten-second item it is.
Why a referral page is telling you this. Because the alternative is letting you optimise the smallest number. The 650 free Supercharging miles on a Model 3 are real and cost nothing to claim, and they are worth a fraction of the VED supplement, which is itself worth a fraction of the difference between financing routes.
