Timing a Tesla Order Around UK Incentive Deadlines in 2026

Unlike some UK EV incentives, the Tesla referral has no deadline of its own — there's no expiry date to race against. But two things around it genuinely do move on a calendar, and it's worth knowing which is which before you decide when to order.

The referral itself: no clock to beat

The 650 free Supercharging miles aren't a limited-time promotion tied to a specific date. As long as the programme is running when you order, opening a referral link before you configure gets you the benefit — there's no reason to rush an order purely to "catch" the referral before some cut-off. That's different from the two incentives below, which genuinely do have dates attached.

The Electric Car Grant's £37,000 cap

The 2026 Electric Car Grant offers up to £3,750 (Band 1) or £1,500 (Band 2) on new EVs priced under £37,000 — but grant bands and eligibility rules are reviewed periodically by the scheme, and most Tesla configurations already start above the cap. This isn't really a "timing" lever for most Tesla buyers, since the price is the blocker rather than the calendar. But if you're cross-shopping a lower-spec configuration close to the threshold, it's worth re-checking the live cap on gov.uk before you configure, since bands can be revised.

The home-charger grant: a real date change

The EV Chargepoint Grant for renters and flat owners is worth roughly £350 currently, rising to £500 from 1 April 2026. If your Tesla order and home-charger installation both fall around that date, the sequencing matters: installing before 1 April 2026 gets the lower amount, after gets the higher one. This is separate from the referral and from the car's price, so it's a genuine reason to think about dates — just not the referral's dates.

Note that this grant is about the charger installation, not the car order — you don't need to time your Tesla order itself around 1 April 2026, only the charger-install booking if you're relying on this specific grant and the date is close either way. If you already have off-street parking with an existing charger, this section simply doesn't apply to your timing at all.

Tesla's own price moves

Tesla adjusts UK prices without a published schedule, and configurator prices we've seen quoted (Model 3 RWD around £40,390, Model Y from around £41,990, as reported in February 2026) can shift by the time you configure. We won't promise a "buy before the price rises" line, because we have no reliable way to predict Tesla's next move — check the live price on tesla.com/en_gb on the day you configure rather than trusting an old screenshot.

Salary sacrifice: a separate calendar entirely

If you're getting a Tesla through work via a salary-sacrifice scheme, the relevant dates are usually your employer's scheme windows and your own tax year, not anything Tesla-specific. A referral link can still be opened and attached before you configure through a salary-sacrifice provider's portal in the same way as a direct order — but check with your scheme provider whether their checkout flow supports carrying a referral link through, since this varies by provider and we won't assume it works identically everywhere.

A simple decision order, not a single deadline

Rather than one master deadline, treat this as three independent checks, in this order: first, does your configuration sit under £37,000 (rare for a Tesla, but check the live price if it's close)? Second, if you need a home charger installed, does the timing around 1 April 2026 change which grant band you'd get? Third — genuinely last, because it has no deadline — open your referral link before you configure.
