UK Company Cars, Salary Sacrifice and Who Receives the Referral Benefit
On a company car or salary-sacrifice lease the order is often placed by a third party. What that does to a Tesla referral benefit, and what to establish before ordering.
A referral attaches to an order and the resulting benefit is delivered to the account that holds that order. On a personal purchase those are the same party. On a UK company car or salary-sacrifice arrangement they frequently are not, and that single fact answers most of the questions in this area.
Who places the order, by arrangement
Personal purchase or personal lease through Tesla. You place the order; the benefit attaches to it; check the order summary as normal.
Third-party lease or novated arrangement. The leasing company places the order. If it did not open a referral link, no referral was attached, and nothing can be added afterwards.
Company car or fleet. The employer or fleet manager places the order on the company's account. Any referral benefit is delivered there rather than to the driver.
What that means in practice for a UK driver
Two consequences follow. The benefit — approximately 650 miles of free Supercharging — would be credited to the account holding the order, so the driver may not be the person who can see or spend it. And in a market where public charging is a material running cost for a company-car driver, the person bearing that cost may not be the person holding the allowance.
What to establish before signing
One question, asked in writing, before the order is placed: will a referral link be applied to the Tesla order, and will the benefit appear on the order summary? Ask the leasing company or fleet manager. An answer that arrives after delivery is not an answer, because there is no retroactive application.
The referrer's side of a third-party order
If a leasing company places the order through a referral link, the referral behaves normally: Tesla Credits to the referrer, capped at the first 10 successful referrals per calendar year, expiring 12 months from the Grant Date. If the company placed its own order without a link, nothing happened for anyone — and that outcome is indistinguishable at delivery from a referral that worked, because the only place it was ever visible was the order summary.
Where the referral sits in the UK company-car picture
Small. Benefit-in-kind treatment, salary-sacrifice mechanics and charging arrangements dominate the economics of a UK company car, and none of them are affected by a referral. This reference states that plainly rather than inflating the referral's importance: it is worth attaching because it is free, and it is not worth restructuring an arrangement over.
The charging question that follows the benefit
Where a company or leasing account holds the order, it may also hold the Supercharging allowance, while the driver bears the day-to-day charging cost — or the reverse, where an employer reimburses public charging. Neither arrangement is affected by the referral programme's terms, and both determine whether the allowance is spent by the party that would otherwise have paid. It is a question to settle with the fleet or leasing contact rather than with Tesla, and it is the reason this entry treats "who receives the benefit" as the operative question rather than "how much is it worth".
Adjacent point: the grant does not apply either
Tesla is absent from the published eligible list for the UK Electric Car Grant, so there is no government grant on a UK Tesla for either a private or a business buyer to stack with a referral. The referral benefit is therefore the only manufacturer-side saving attachable to the order, which is a reason to establish who receives it rather than to assume it will land somewhere useful.
