Tesla Referral Code Timing in the UK: Myths vs Facts

Can you add a referral code after ordering? Does it expire in 24 hours? We check common UK timing claims against how tesla.com/en_gb actually works.

We hear the same handful of timing claims about UK Tesla referrals over and over, some true, some not. Here's each one checked against how the process actually behaves on tesla.com/en_gb.

Myth: "You can add a code within a day or two of ordering"

Fact: no. The referral is tagged to your session when you open the link, before you configure. Once an order is confirmed and paid, there is no window — same day or otherwise — in which a code can be attached retroactively. If this were true it would make the "open the link first" rule pointless, and it consistently isn't. We've seen this claim repeated in forum comments without a source; treat any such claim as false unless it's confirmed directly on tesla.com/en_gb.

Myth: "The referral link expires within 24–48 hours of clicking it"

Fact: unconfirmed, so we won't quote a number. Tesla doesn't publish an exact session length for how long a referral tag persists in your browser. What we can say with confidence is that clearing cookies, switching browsers, or switching devices between clicking the link and ordering can cause it to drop — so the safe habit is to configure and order in one sitting on the same browser, rather than relying on any specific hour count.

Myth: "Ordering near the end of the quarter unlocks extra referral perks"

Fact: not for the referral. Quarter-end timing can affect Tesla's own delivery push and, anecdotally, inventory pricing on certain configurations — but that's a separate lever from the referral programme, which gives the same 650 free Supercharging miles regardless of what day of the quarter you order. Don't confuse "Tesla wants to hit a delivery number this quarter" with "the referral is worth more this week."

Myth: "If I click two different people's links, I can pick which one applies later"

Fact: no — the safer assumption is that the most recent link you open in that session is the one that sticks, overwriting an earlier one. If you want to support a specific owner's link, open theirs last and don't click any others afterwards before you order.

Myth: "The referral is only valid on launch day of a new model"

Fact: no. The 650-mile benefit applies to ongoing Model 3 and Model Y orders, not just around a new model's UK launch. There's no version of the programme we've found that ties it to a launch window.

Myth: "A reservation doesn't count — only a full configured order needs the link"

Fact: treat them the same. If your model uses an initial reservation step before a full configuration, the safer assumption is that the referral needs to be attached at the reservation stage, not saved up for when you later convert it into a full order. Waiting risks the reservation itself being treated as the un-referred starting point.

Myth: "Being logged into the referrer's Tesla Account carries the benefit across to my order"

Fact: no. The referral is tied to the link and the session in which you configure and order under your own account, not to whose account you happen to be logged into or friendly with. You still need to open the referral link yourself, in your own session, before configuring your own order.

The one thing that is true

The only hard timing rule that consistently holds is: open the link before you configure, and don't break the session in between. Everything else — hour counts, quarter-end bonuses, launch-day exclusivity — is either unconfirmed or false.
