Tesla's March 2026 Referral Shake-Up: UK Impact

Tesla revised its referral and loyalty programmes in March 2026, and the change reported at the time lines up with what we'd already flagged as a UK reality: Model S and Model X dropped off the referral-eligible list. Two other details in the same overhaul are worth a UK buyer's attention — and one of them is genuinely new information we hadn't seen dated anywhere before.

What changed, as reported

The change, reported via Tesla's Refer & Earn support page and covered by Teslarati, removed Model S and Model X from the referral-eligible vehicle list, leaving Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck as the qualifying models globally. It also set the referrer reward at a reported $250 Tesla Credit (or “local equivalent”) per successful referral, cut the loyalty discount on premium vehicles from $1,000 to $500, and — the detail we hadn't seen clearly dated before — set referral and loyalty credits to expire 12 months after the Grant Date.

Why "Cybertruck-eligible" means nothing here

Read literally, the eligible-model list now includes Cybertruck. For a UK buyer that's not a benefit: Cybertruck isn't sold or road-legal in the UK, so the practical UK eligible-model list is Model 3 and Model Y only, exactly as our eligibility page already states. Worth spelling out, because a global announcement read without local context can sound like the UK gained a model it didn't.

The referrer reward we still won't quote in pounds

$250 is the reported US figure. We've said before that the UK referrer-credit amount is uncertain across sources, and this report doesn't resolve that — “local equivalent” is doing a lot of work in that sentence without a confirmed £ number attached. Until Tesla UK's Refer & Earn page states a figure directly, we're treating this as unconfirmed for the UK, not as £250.

New: a 12-month expiry on referral and loyalty credits

This is the detail most UK coverage seems to have missed. If credits — including, by extension, a UK referrer's reward once confirmed — expire 12 months after the Grant Date, that's a genuine planning detail: a referrer sitting on unredeemed Tesla Credits for over a year could see them lapse. We haven't seen this expiry confirmed specifically on the UK support pages as of this publish, so treat it as a reported global policy to verify against your own account rather than an assumed UK certainty — but it's worth checking in the Tesla app if you've referred someone in the past year.

The loyalty-discount cut, and who it actually affects

The $1,000-to-$500 loyalty discount cut applies to owners trading up to another Tesla, not to referral buyers or first-time UK orders — it's a separate lever from the 650-mile referral benefit this site is built around. If you're an existing UK owner considering a second Tesla, check the current UK loyalty terms directly rather than assuming the older, larger figure still applies; loyalty and referral are two different programmes that happen to share a support page.

The financing angle: why this matters beyond the headline number

Read as a financing story rather than a headline figure, the useful takeaway is sequencing: a referral's 650 miles land after delivery regardless of any of these programme tweaks, but a referrer's own reward — once quantified for the UK — could now carry a use-it-within-12-months clock that a straightforward Supercharging-mile credit doesn't. If you're both buying with a referral and planning to share your own code afterwards, that's one more reason to check your Tesla app after your first year as an owner, rather than assuming Tesla Credits sit there indefinitely.

A worked example: the 12-month clock in practice

Say a UK owner referred a friend in August 2025, before this March 2026 change was reported. If that referral's Grant Date sits in August 2025 and the 12-month expiry now reported applies retroactively to existing credits — which we have not seen confirmed either way — the credit would lapse around August 2026. If instead the expiry only applies to referrals made from the March 2026 change onward, an August 2025 referral would carry no such clock at all. That's exactly the kind of ambiguity that makes a reported policy worth checking in your own Tesla app rather than assuming either reading. The practical habit either way: note the date any referral you make actually converts to a credit, and check the app again roughly eleven months later rather than leaving it indefinitely.

What this means for a UK order today

For a straightforward UK Model 3 or Model Y order, the 650 free Supercharging miles are unaffected by any of this — that part of the programme hasn't moved. What has moved is the wider eligible-model list (irrelevant to the UK, since Cybertruck isn't here) and two figures — the referrer credit, the expiry window — reported globally but not yet confirmed on tesla.com/en_gb. We'll update this note the moment either is confirmed for the UK, with the date we checked.
