What UK Referral Credits Cannot Be Used For
Tesla referral credits are defined by their exclusions: no cash, no transfer, no gift cards, no reissue. The documented limits, and the one point sources dispute.
Tesla Credits are a non-cash balance held in a Tesla account and redeemable through the Loot Box in the Tesla app. For reference purposes the useful definition is negative: the list of things a credit balance specifically cannot become. That list is where most plans for a referral reward fail.
The documented exclusions
Not redeemable for cash. A credit balance cannot offset a payment, a deposit, a finance instalment, or a purchase price. It is not a discount expressed differently.
Not transferable. A balance cannot be moved to another person or another Tesla account, including within a single household.
Not reissuable. A balance that has expired or been redeemed cannot be restored. There is no support route back.
Not valid for gift cards. The obvious substitute for cash is closed explicitly.
Not valid for alcohol. A narrow carve-out, and a useful indication that the redemption catalogue has at some point been broad enough to require one.
Redemptions are final. There is no return path on a redeemed item, which makes the Loot Box a place to execute a decision rather than to browse.
The disputed line
Whether Tesla Shop merchandise can be redeemed with referral credits. Sources that agree on every exclusion above disagree on this one. This reference does not resolve it, because it cannot be resolved from published material. The current answer for any given account is the set of categories that account's own Loot Box offers.
What credits reliably do
They offset things Tesla sells to an existing owner. Supercharging is the most common use, because it is a recurring cost that requires no judgement about taste and cannot be purchased in the wrong size — which also makes it the safest use under deadline pressure.
The deadline attached to the balance
Credits expire 12 months from the Grant Date. A 30-day warning email precedes expiry. One mechanism extends the deadline: a further successful referral extends all credits in the account to 12 months from the newest Grant Date, so the entire balance moves rather than the new portion alone.
Why this matters more to a UK referrer than to a UK buyer
Because the two sides of the programme receive different things. A UK buyer receives approximately 650 miles of free Supercharging — charging distance, not credits — which expires on a six-month clock and has no catalogue, no redemption step and no transfer question. It is consumed automatically at the stall.
A UK referrer receives credits, and everything on this page applies to them. Confusing the two produces the common error of describing a buyer's benefit as expiring in twelve months.
The amount, and why it is absent here
Public reporting states the referrer's credit at $250 in some places and $500 in others. Both cannot be current, and averaging two contested figures produces a third that describes no account. This reference therefore states the mechanism — Tesla Credits, capped at the first 10 successful referrals per calendar year — and directs the reader to the balance shown in their own account.
