Tesla Model Y Trim & Referral FAQ (UK, 2026)
Does the UK Tesla referral change by Model Y trim? Does the £37k grant apply to the entry trim? Common Model Y trim questions, answered plainly for 2026.
Trim-choice questions come up almost as often as referral questions on the Model Y — and the two get tangled together more than they should. Here are the common ones, answered separately.
Does the referral benefit differ between RWD, Long Range and Performance?
No. Every UK Model Y trim earns the same 650 free Supercharging miles when ordered through a referral link. There is no trim tier that earns more or less — see the eligibility table on the main reference.
Does choosing the cheapest trim get me under the £37,000 Electric Car Grant cap?
Usually not. Entry RWD Model Y pricing has itself sat above £37,000 (from around £41,990 as reported in February 2026), so picking the base trim doesn't reliably bring a Model Y under the cap. Always check the live configured price against the current cap on gov.uk rather than assuming.
Is Performance worth ordering just to "make the referral worthwhile"?
No — that reasoning doesn't hold up. The referral gives the identical 650 miles regardless of trim, so it shouldn't factor into a Performance-vs-RWD decision at all. Choose Performance only if the extra power and driving feel matter to you on their own terms.
Do I need to open a new referral link if I change trim mid-configuration?
No. The referral is tagged to your browser session when you open the link, not to a specific trim selection. You can switch between RWD, Long Range and Performance freely while configuring in the same session without needing to reopen the link — the one thing that does drop it is clearing cookies or switching browsers, not switching trims.
Does financing (PCP, lease, cash) change by trim in a way that affects the referral?
No. As covered in UK incentives & finance, how you finance the car doesn't change the referral outcome for any trim. Financing terms themselves (deposit, monthly cost) do vary by trim price, but that's a separate calculation from the referral.
Can I compare Model Y trims against a Model 3 trim instead?
Yes, and the referral doesn't change that comparison either — both models earn the identical 650-mile benefit. See our Model 3 referral note alongside the Model Y note if you're weighing the saloon against the SUV rather than trims within the Model Y itself.
If I upgrade my order from RWD to Long Range later, do I lose the referral?
Changing your configuration before you pay the order fee is part of the same configuring session covered by the referral's timing rule — it isn't a new order. What genuinely risks losing the referral is clearing cookies, switching browsers, or leaving and coming back without the link still tagged, not the act of switching trim within one sitting. If in doubt, re-check the order summary for the referral line after any change, before you pay.
Does my trim choice affect the £350/£500 home-charger grant?
No. The EV Chargepoint Grant is tied to your home-charging setup and circumstances (renting or owning a flat), not to which Tesla trim you order — it's a completely separate scheme from anything model- or trim-specific. See UK incentives & finance for how it fits alongside the referral.
Does ordering a higher trim change my delivery timeline or the referral's timing rules?
Not in any way we've found evidence for. Production and delivery slots vary by configuration and demand, but the referral's own timing rule — open the link before you configure, and don't break the session in between — is identical whichever trim you end up ordering. See our full order timeline for the stage-by-stage version that applies regardless of trim.
Where do I get the current trim specs and prices?
Only from tesla.com/en_gb — trim names, range and pricing are among the details Tesla changes most often, and we won't repeat a spec sheet here that could be out of date by the time you read it. For what has changed recently, see what changed for the Model Y in 2026.
