How to Choose a UK Model Y Trim, Step by Step (2026)

Rather than a general explainer, here's the trim decision as a sequence — six steps, in the order that actually avoids revisiting an earlier choice once you've moved on.

Step 1 — Set your budget ceiling first

Decide the maximum you're prepared to spend before you open the configurator, including any finance route (cash, PCP, lease) you're planning. Doing this before you see trim-specific prices stops the ceiling quietly creeping upward once you've seen what Performance offers.

Step 2 — Check your ceiling against the £37,000 grant cap

The 2026 Electric Car Grant is worth up to £3,750 (Band 1) or £1,500 (Band 2), but only on new EVs priced under £37,000. UK Model Y pricing reported for the entry RWD trim has sat from around £41,990 (February 2026), so for most buyers this step ends quickly: the cap doesn't apply to any current Model Y trim. Still worth checking the live configured price against the current cap on gov.uk, in case either figure has moved by the time you order.

Step 3 — Work out your real range need

Not your longest hypothetical trip — your actual regular one. If you can charge overnight at home and rarely drive further than a single Supercharger stop away, the range gap between RWD and Long Range matters less than it looks on a spec sheet. If you regularly do longer unplanned trips with limited home charging, it matters more.

Step 4 — Decide if all-wheel drive or extra performance genuinely matters to you

Long Range and Performance both add a second motor over RWD's single rear motor, which changes traction and, for Performance, acceleration. Ask whether that changes anything about how you actually drive — towing, regular poor-weather driving, or wanting the extra pace for its own sake are legitimate reasons; wanting to match a number you saw quoted elsewhere isn't.

Step 5 — Open your referral link, whatever trim you've landed on

Once steps 1–4 have settled a trim (or narrowed it to two), open a referral link before you touch the configurator. This step is identical regardless of which trim you chose — the 650 free Supercharging miles don't vary by trim, so there's nothing to reconsider here based on steps 1–4.

Step 6 — Configure, then verify before you pay

Build your chosen trim in the same browser session you opened the link in. Before paying the order fee, check the order summary shows the referral line — this is the last point at which it's fixable; once paid, it cannot be added retroactively. Why this order, specifically

Steps 1–4 are about the car and your circumstances; steps 5–6 are about the referral and are completely unaffected by anything decided earlier. Doing the car-specific steps first means you're not tempted to pick a trim "to make the referral worthwhile" — it's worth exactly the same either way — and doing the referral steps last means nothing about weighing RWD against Performance risks delaying when you open the link, since it takes moments regardless of how long steps 1–4 take.

What to do if you change your mind partway through

It's common to start at step 1 assuming RWD, work through steps 2–4, and end up leaning towards Long Range once you've thought properly about range and traction — or the other way round. That's fine, and it doesn't mean starting the whole process again: revisit steps 1–4 for the new trim you're considering, and only move on to steps 5–6 once you're genuinely settled. The one thing not to do is open your referral link, then spend days going back and forth on trim in a different browser or device while comparing configurator links — that's the scenario most likely to break the session tagging from step 5, for reasons unrelated to the trim decision itself.

What this process deliberately leaves out
